The Schoolyard stems from a personal memory of my childhood while living in apartheid South Africa, where I attended a segregated, all-white school. The piece captures the quiet, heavy loss of innocence I felt when my desire to connect across a divide was blocked by boundaries beyond my control. It is a deeply personal contemplation on the enduring shame and grief of a connection left unmade, and the lifelong impact of barriers that should never have existed.
